For those of us in the Southern Hemisphere, we’re now stepping into the heart of winter. Dark mornings, frosty car windows and southerly winds. Brrrrr… 

While we long for those envious Europe summer days, let’s not get down and out about it. Let’s band together and make the most of our few months sub 15 degrees.

At Fable HQ, we find winter can spark some creative wardrobe choices. The layering technique always works well – e.g. silk shirt layered with a cardigan, a scarf and then a coat. And by layering, we’re not talking about putting on every item of clothing to keep warm (aka Joey from Friends).

That’s why it’s always good to have a staple winter uniform. A few pieces that you know will go with everything and keep you warm at the same time. 

Here are our suggestions on what you need to survive winter:

Good quality leather boots

Ladies, just think investment! While the initial cost might be overwhelming, finding good quality leather boots will keep you stomping through those winter months. It’s all about ‘cost per wear’ and if you can get a few winters out of your boots, you’re winning. Look for boots that are mostly made of leather (inner and outer lining). The sole can be synthetic, which works well on those rainy, wet days. We love the collection at Zomp Shoez; a mix of local and international brands and a range of prices.

Woollen coat

Caution: always read the label. While there may be a coat that looks super warm and is soft and cuddly, it may be made of synthetic materials. AND here’s the trap… sometimes they’re the same price as those that are made from wool. If you can splurge, get yourself a wool/cashmere blend or otherwise a wool blend will do just fine (aim for at least 30% wool or more).

Comfortable jeans

Nothing can stop a woman in a great pair of jeans. We’re very lucky that there is a great variety of styles and colours to choose from. What’s hot at the moment are the 90s, high-waisted relaxed fit (mum jeans = life) and the wide-leg 70s look. The Fable team are always of the view that you should wear whatever suits your body and feels comfortable. No one should be walking around all day in jeans that feel like they may cut you in half. Yikes! Jeans are so versatile too. Pair with a silk top, belt and coat, and you’re ready to hit the town.

Winter accessories

When in doubt, add some accessories. Scarves, beanies, and gloves are good staples to have if you either need to dress up or just need to protect yourself from those southerly winds.
